07/20/12 - Seven Gatemen Named CCBL All-Stars
By SCOTT EATON
CAMDEN, ME: Three Wareham Gatemen will start for the Cape Cod League's Western Division All-Star Team and four others were named to the squad that will take on the CCBL Eastern Division All-Stars on Saturday, July 28th at Whitehouse Field in Harwich, Massachusetts.
Daniel Palka (Georgia Tech) will start at first base and his Gatemen and Yellow Jacket teammate, Mott Hyde (Georgia Tech) will be the starting second baseman. Middleboro, Massachusetts native Tyler Horan (VirginiaTech) gets the starting nod in left-field. Another pair of college teammates, Catcher Ty Ross (LSU) and RHP Nick Rumbelow (LSU) have also been named CCBL All-Stars and they will be joined by RHP Colby Suggs (Arkansas) and RHP Konner Wade (Arizona who is making his second consecutive CCBL All-Star appearance.
Palka is perhaps having the best all-around offensive season among all players in the Cape Cod Baseball League this summer. He is second in homeruns with 8 and fourth in rbi with 25 to support his .292 batting average. Like Palka, Mott Hyde is in his second season on the Cape with the Gatemen and has turned that experience into an All-Star game nod. He is hitting .296 to go along with 4 homers and 17 rbi. He also has 6 stolen bases.
Tyler Horan is perhaps the most "local" All-Star for the Gatemen in the modern era of the CCBL. Residing in the neighboring town of Middleboro, Massachusetts, this is the second honor of the summer of Horan who was one of only 8 players invited to participate in the College Baseball Homerun Derby in Omaha, NE earlier in the season. Selected to start in left-field for the West Team, Tyler is tied for 4th in the league with 7 homeruns and his 18 rbi and .323 batting average place him in the top 15 in both categories.
The talented Gatemen bullpen is well represented on the All-Star roster as hard throwing right-handed relievers Nick Rumbelow and Colby Suggs. Despite making all of his appearances out of the bullpen for Wareham, Rumbelow is 7th in strikeouts with 33. His LSU Tiger and Gatemen battery-mate Ty Ross, in his second season on Cape Cod, will goto Harwich with him as a catcher for the West squad.
The "veteran" All-Star returning to the game for the second consecutive year is Konner Wade. Wade was the West Team's MVP in the 2011 CCBL All-Star game that was played at Boston's Fenway Park. He was the league's leading closer last year and after arriving a little late due to his standout College World Series performance for the National Champion Wildcats, Wade has impressed again and has been named to the team. The CCBL All-Star game will be played at Harwich's Whitehouse Field starting at 6:00pm. However, come early as the gates will open up at 2:00pm for the annual homerun hitting contest, autograph sessions and a large merchandise tent featuring products from all 10 teams.
