07/25/13 - Schwarber Returns - Picks Up Where He Left Off

By MIKE MONACO

YARMOUTH, MA:   The last time Wareham catcher Kyle Schwarber (Indiana) played a baseball game on Cape Cod, he propelled the Gatemen to a league championship at Red Wilson Field against Yarmouth-Dennis. In that ballgame, Schwarber blasted a ninth-inning solo home run and a three-run blast in the 10th inning to complete the Wareham comeback.

On a cold and windy Thursday night against the Red Sox at Red Wilson Field, Schwarber returned to the Cape for his first game of the 2013 summer and launched a two-run home run in the ninth inning to tie the game at 2-2. The game eventually ended in a tie after the game was called due to darkness.

“[Yarmouth-Dennis manager Scott Pickler] before the game started said ‘Schwarber’s here?’ I said ‘Yeah.’ He said ‘I’ve had nightmares about him for a year.’ So I guess he’ll have another night-full of that,” Wareham manager Cooper Farris said afterward.

“It’s kind of just real funny that it happens to be the same spot,” Schwarber added. “It feels good to have a Wareham jersey back on and to help out the team.”

Schwarber’s game-tying shot to right field was part of a 4-for-4 night for the Gatemen catcher. After the teams traded zeroes for the first seven-and-a-half innings, the Red Sox took a 2-0 lead in the home half of the eighth when shortstop Alex Blandino (Stanford) ripped a two-run double down the third-base line. In the top of the ninth, Wareham second baseman Brett Pirtle (Mississippi State) reached on an error to set the table for Schwarber, who proceeded to launch a home run into the wind and over the fence in right-center field.

“I was just looking for a pitch that was going to be elevated and I don’t know if it was a changeup or a fastball but I saw elevation and I knew that was a good chance that I could get some good head on it and fortunately enough, I didn’t know if it was going to get out with the new balls and the wind blowing but I got enough backspin on it and height and it went out,” Schwarber said.

Schwarber, who played his final game with Indiana on June 19 at the College World Series, just finished his summer tour with the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team. The squad finished its 23-game schedule Tuesday, and Schwarber arrived in Wareham less than 24 hours later. Schwarber played 21 games for the Red, White and Blue and batted .301 with 16 RBIs. Despite Wareham’s tough season, Schwarber said he didn’t question returning to the Cape.

“Cooper’s done a lot for me and I told him at the beginning of the year that I’d come out here and help and it didn’t matter the position that they were in,” Schwarber said.

With Schwarber doing the catching, Wareham starting pitcher Andro Cutura (Southeastern Louisiana) spun 7.1 strong innings on the hill. Cutura scattered eight hits and gave up just the two runs on the Blandino double.

“Oh [he was] unbelievable,” Farris said of Cutura. “I mean he threw strikes. He kept them off-balance, a good-hitting team. I thought he did a great job of just competing and making good pitches when he needed to. I thought he only made one bad pitch and that was a double down the line. It was a changeup.”

Wareham right-hander Jared Ruxer (Louisville) came in to finish off the eighth inning, and fellow right-hander Bradley Roney (Southern Mississippi) pitched perfect ninth and tenth innings and struck out four of the six batters he faced.

“Bradley came in and threw really great too,” Farris said. “I thought Bradley was outstanding. That’s probably the most dominant I’ve seen him this summer. And each outing he’s getting better every time.”

Yarmouth-Dennis relief pitcher Kody Kerski (Sacred Heart) pitched two innings of scoreless relief as well and the game ended in a tie.

The Gatemen will be back in action Friday night when theytake on Falmouth at Arnie Allen Diamond. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
