04/25/08 - Justin Masterson Makes MLB Debut for Boston Red Sox
Justin Masterson, former Gatemen All-Star pitcher before being drafted by the Boston Red Sox in 2006, made his major league debut yesterday at Fenway park starting for the Sox in front of family and many Gatemen friends and supporters. Justin, wearing number 63, pitched 6 innings and allowed only 1 run and 2 hits while striking out 4 Anaheim Angels. Linda and Jim McKiernan, Gatemen organizational members and Masterson's host family while he was in Wareham, had the opportunity to meet with Justin after the after watching the game from the player's spectator section at Fenway.
Justin Masterson pitched for the Wareham Gatemen in 2005 out of Bethel College in Indiana. After his All-Star season for the Gatemen as a closer, where he compiled a 3-1 record, a 1.15 era while striking out 39 batters in 31.1 innings; making 22 appearances and saving 10 games (3rd most in Gatemen history), Justin transferred to San Diego State University where he played for head coach Tony Gwynn. Masterson was subsequently drafted by the Boston Red Sox along with former Gatemen teammate and CCBL All-Star Daniel Bard. That same year in 2006, while pitching for Red Sox affiliate Lowell, Masterson threw out the first pitch in a game at Spillane Field. Congratulations Justin from the Wareham Gatemen organization!!!
