WAREHAM- The Gatemen will play their first home game of the season today as they take on the Harwich Mariners tonight at 6:30 p.m.
The Gatemen (1-0) are coming off a 12-4 win in their season opener against the Chatham Anglers. SP Joey Matulovich gave the Gatemen four shutout innings while RP Brendan White pitched two scoreless innings in relief to pick up the win.
The Gatemen offense pounded out 10 hits on the evening, five of which were part of a seven-run ninth inning. Oliver Dunn and Andrew Vaughn each hit homers last night during the win. Dunn’s solo shot put the Gatemen up 4-0 in the fifth while Vaughn hit a grand slam to extend the Wareham lead to 10-4 in the ninth.

The Harwich Mariners (1-0) are coming off a win as well. Harwich played a much closer game and defeated the Orleans Firebirds by a score of 3-2. SP Garrett Stallings pitched six innings allowing two runs on four hits. The Mariners were tied 2-2 in the seventh before RF Gabriel Rivera scored on a wild pitch to take the lead.
For Wareham, LHP Ken Waldichuk is today’s scheduled starter. Waldichuk is a rising junior at St. Mary’s College in Calif. and was named a Second Team All-American this past season.
Waldichuk posted a 2.05 ERA in 92.1 innings to go along with an 8-4 record. Waldichuk also had phenomenal command this past year. He struck out 118 batters while only walking 21.
The scheduled starter for Harwich had a season just as impressive as Waldichuk’s. RHP Ricky DeVtio from Seton Hall was named 2018 Big East Pitcher of the Year and was also named an All-American as a second teamer. DeVito went 6-3 this year with a 1.88 ERA in 12 games started.
Gatemen catcher Michael Amditis is available tonight off the bench after being scratched last night from the starting lineup due to shoulder tightness as a precaution.
