Game 8 Preview: Gatemen take on East Division leading Anglers

WAREHAM – The Gatemen (5-2) look to get back to their winning ways tonight as they take on the Chatham Anglers (4-2) at 6:30 p.m. right here at Spillane Field in Wareham.

The Gatemen are coming off a doubleheader split with the Orleans Firebirds Sunday afternoon. In game one, the Gatemen trailed 3-1 entering the last half inning of play. Back-to-back singles by Bryson Stott and Drew Millas brought the winning run to the plate with no outs. Austin Shenton smacked a walk-off 3-run homer as the Gatemen stole game one 4-3.

In game two, Orleans blew out Wareham 10-4. The Firebirds pounded out 16 hits and cruised to victory. Josh Hendrickson recorded the victory for Orleans allowing three unearned runs in his four innings of work.

The Anglers enter play today red hot as they are winners of three in a row. Chatham defeated Hyannis 10-1 Saturday night before sweeping the Bourne Braves in the doubleheader on Sunday. The Anglers won those games 7-2 and 4-1 respectively.

Today’s game between the Gatemen and Anglers marks the second of four meetings between the two teams in this East-West Division crossover.

The first meeting occurred on Opening Day when the Gatemen won 12-4 in Chatham. The game was close as Wareham led 5-4 entering the ninth and then a seven run Gatemen rally blew it open. Oliver Dunn and Andrew Vaughn both homered versus Chatham in that one.

The Gatemen will next take on the Anglers on June 27 when Chatham comes back to Spillane Field for the final time of the regular season.

LHP Ken Waldichuk (0-0, 2.25 ERA) makes the start today for Wareham. Waldichuk threw four innings in his debut for the Gatemen allowing one run and struck out six in a 3-2 win over Harwich.

RHP Kyle Hurt (0-0, 2.25 ERA) is the scheduled starter today for the Anglers. Hurt will be making his second Cape League start today and is coming off a great outing his first time around. Hurt pitched four scoreless against the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox in a game that resulted in a 1-1 tie. Hurt just completed his freshman season at USC where he went 4-5 with a 4.76 ERA.

Two newcomers are in the lineups today for the Gatemen. Jeremy Ydens from UCLA will be playing right field and hitting leadoff. Ydens hit .350 with six homers out of the leadoff spot for the Bruins. Lael Lockhart Jr. from the University of Houston makes his season debut as the DH hitting fifth. Lockhart hit .297 with 21 extra base hits for the Cougars.
