Gatemen alumni update: Where are they now?

When a player decides to play in the Cape League for the summer, there is one main goal in mind: to get one step closer to the MLB.

That is exactly the chance players get when they come to Wareham and the numbers prove it.

Currently, there are 100 former members of the Wareham Gatemen who have played a game in the minors or majors this season. 25 of those alumni have appeared in an MLB game while 75 are in the minor leagues.

Here’s an update on a few of those Gatemen Alumni:

Dallas Keuchel (2007-2008) and George Springer (2009-2010): The former AL Cy Young Award winner and World Series MVP are both doing their parts to keep the Houston Astros in first place this season. Springer is off to a great start and has not cooled off since October. He is hitting .279 this season with 14 homers and 41 RBI. As for Keuchel, his numbers are disappointing by his standards, but solid nevertheless. Keuchel’s ERA this season is 4.15 and he has started a league high 15 games so far.

Willie Calhoun (2014): This outfielder in the Triple-A system for the Texas Rangers might be due for a promotion soon. Calhoun is having a great season for Round Rock as he has played in 68 games and is hitting .277. Calhoun has 25 extra base hits, 19 of them doubles. Calhoun made his MLB debut last season for Texas and ended up playing in 13 games hitting .265 for the Rangers.

Max Muncy (2010-2011): The 27-year-old is having a career year for the Los Angeles Dodgers so far. Muncy has displayed plenty of pop this season hitting 13 homers with 30 RBI to date. This season is Muncy’s first in Los Angeles with the big club. Muncy has also shown plenty of versatility as he has already played four different positions on defense (1B, 2B, 3B, and LF).

Ian Hamilton (2015): Hamilton has appeared in 21 games for the Double-A Birmingham Barons in the Chicago White Sox organization. Hamilton is 2-1 on the season with a 1.78 ERA. Opponents are hitting just .211 off Hamilton. His success on the mound has earned Hamilton the closer’s role. He has recorded 12 saves in 13 tries this year.

Hamilton has struck out 13 batters over his last 10 games.

Preston Palmeiro (2014): The seventh-round draft pick of the Baltimore Orioles is hitting .279 in Class-A Advanced ball. Palmeiro has nine homers and 37 runs driven on. On defense, Palmeiro plays second base and owns a .969 fielding percentage.

Shaun Anderson (2015): The former third round draft pick of the Boston Red Sox is now in the San Francisco system as Anderson was part of a trade last season that brought Eduardo Nunez to Boston. Anderson begins his 2018 season in Double-A Richmond and is having success. Anderson has started 13 games and has a 5-3 record with a 3.07 ERA to show for it. He has shown excellent command striking out 76 and walking just 19 batters.
