Game 15 Preview: Gatemen battle Harbor Hawks for first place

HYANNIS – The Wareham Gatemen (9-5) are back in action today following their off day on Monday. The Gatemen hit the road as they travel to Hyannis to take on the Harbor Hawks (8-4-1) at McKeon Park at 6:00 p.m.

The Gatemen last played on Sunday and split their doubleheader against the YD Red Sox. In game one, the Gatemen dominated. Wareham cruised to a 10-4 win behind a 3-run homer by Lael Lockhart Jr. and a 2-run shot by Andrew Vaughn. It was second time this season Wareham had scored double digit runs in a game.

In game two, Wareham was ahead 2-0 through five innings after receiving a strong start from Will Proctor. Proctor through five shutout innings and allowed just three hits. Parker Phillips and Bryant Packard each hit solo homers to account for the two Wareham runs. In the sixth, the Gatemen bullpen faltered and the Red Sox scored four runs in the inning. YD would hang on to win 4-3 in that contest.

The Harbor Hawks enter today’s game winners of four straight and have not last in their last 5 games. In fact, the last Hyannis loss came on June 20 against Wareham. In that game, the Gatemen won 9-0 behind a strong outing from Connor Lunn (five innings pitched, eight strikeouts, zero runs) and a dynamic game from UCLA teammates Jeremy Ydens and Ryan Kreidler (six hits, six RBI combined).

LHP Ken Waldichuk (1-0, 1.00 ERA) will be the starter for Wareham this evening. Waldichuk has thrown two of the best starts a Gatemen starter has made this year. In each of his first two games, Waldichuk struck out six batters. Last time out, Waldichuk recorded his first win of the season in a 6-3 win over Chatham on June 19.

RHP Nick MacDonald (0-1, 10.80 ERA) will be starting tonight for Hyannis. MacDonald has been shaky in each of his first two starts this season. MacDonald went four innings last time out giving up three runs after only lasting 2.2 innings while surrendering five runs in his first start. MacDonald is rising junior from FIU and is coming off a 3-4 year with a 4.26 ERA.

With Andrew Vaughn and Bryson Stott departing for Team USA, the Gatemen have two newcomers to the roster. INF Pavin Parks joins the Wareham roster after finishing his junior season at Kent State. Parks hit .285 with seven homers and 52 RBI for the Golden Flashes. Parks was also recently drafted by the San Diego Padres in round 24 of the MLB Draft just a few weeks ago.

RHP Jack Ralston is the other new player and he joins the Gatemen from UCLA where he completed his freshman campaign. This past season Ralston had a 6.44 ERA with a 1-4 record for the Bruins.
