HARTFORD – The Wareham Gatemen (20-14-1) will take on the YD Red Sox (21-11-4) today in a game that begins at 12:30 p.m. from Dunkin’ Donuts Park in Hartford, Conn.
The Gatemen will be the home team today at Dunkin’ Donuts Park, the home of the Double-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies, as the game was originally scheduled to be played at Spillane Field in Wareham.
Following today’s game, the Gatemen have eight regular season games remaining. Four of the games will be played at Spillane Field in Wareham and the other four games are on the road.
Wareham enters play today having lost their last contest before the All-Star Game against the Cotuit Kettleers 4-3 back on Saturday July 21.
In that game, Wareham led 3-1 in the eighth inning when Ryan Stoudemire surrendered a 2-run homer to Garrett Wolforth which tied the game. Two innings later, Cotuit pushed ahead when Jonathan Robertson singled off Cody Carroll to drive in the final run of the night. Despite the loss, Wareham is still 5-4-1 in their last 10.
As for the YD Red Sox, they enter play red hot as of late having won seven of their last 10 games and were the first team in the league to clinch a playoff spot. YD’s last game was yesterday and the Red Sox defeated the Bourne Braves 8-3.
Tommy Henry went six strong innings to record the win allowing two runs off four hits, one walk, and four strikeouts. As for the potent YD offense, six different Red Sox had RBIs. With the eight runs scored yesterday, YD now has scored the most runs in the league (190). The Gatemen trail by just one run (189) and have the league’s second best offense as well as the most runs scored in the West Division.
Today’s matchup with YD is the fourth and final game between these two teams in the regular season. Back on June 24, these two clubs each recorded a win in a scheduled doubleheader at YD. The Gatemen won the first game of the twin bill 10-4, but lost the second one 4-3. One week later, YD came to Spillane Field on July 1 and defeated the Gatemen 6-5.
Nathan Florence makes his first appearance today since July 14 (via Caroline O'Connor).
RHP Nathan Florence (0-0, 9.34 ERA) gets his first start of the summer today. For Florence, there is a bit of local flavor for today’s game as he goes to school at the University of Hartford. In 15 appearances for the Hawks this season, Florence went 4-5 with a 3.78 ERA in 85.2 IP. In his last outing for Wareham, Florence gave up two runs in one inning against the Commodores on July 14.
RHP Tommy Mace (1-1, 8.71 ERA) gets the nod for the Red Sox today and will oppose Florence. Mace has made three appearances this summer and has given up runs in all three outings. In his last time out, he allowed four runs in four innings against the Bourne Braves in a game YD lost 6-3 back on July 18.
