WAREHAM – The Gatemen (24-16-2) play for the final time of the regular season at home against the Bourne Braves (17-24-1) tonight at 6:30 p.m.
Wareham tied the Cotuit Kettleers yesterday 4-4 in a game that featured two great comebacks in the ninth inning. Wareham trailed 3-0 with three outs remaining before scoring four in the frame to take a 4-3 lead.
In the bottom of the ninth, Cotuit was down to their last out but strung three straight hits together to drive in the tying run. From there, Wareham got out of the inning and the game ended after nine because of darkness since there are no lights at Lowell Park in Cotuit.
Skyler Hunter (51) steals second base in the 4-4 tie yesterday to Cotuit. Hunter bats ninth tonight playing center field (via Caroline O'Connor).
As for Bourne, the Braves held a 3-1 lead in seventh, but they wound up losing to the Hyannis Harbor Hawks. Hyannis scored three runs in the bottom half of the seventh and ended up winning 4-3. Seth Gray gave Hyannis the lead when he hit a two-run double with two down in the inning.
With two games remaining, Hyannis trails Wareham by one point for first place in the West Division with two games remaining.
The Gatemen made one roster move today as RHP Cody Carroll was released and the team signed RHP Alex Stiegler from Yale. Carroll went 1-2 this summer for Wareham with a 1-2 record and a 4.80 ERA in nine games. Stiegler, a rising junior, had a 3.38 ERA this season in 10 games at Yale and will provide the Gatemen with a depth arm down the stretch.
RHP Nathan Florence (0-1, 7.10 ERA) gets the start today for Wareham and is coming off his best start of the season. In his last outing, Florence allowed one run in his start at Dunkin’ Donuts Park in Hartford, Conn. on July 24. Overall, it was Florence’s longest start of the summer.
RHP Andy Archer (1-0, 6.54 ERA) gets his first start of the summer tonight and will be making his sixth appearance overall. Over his last two outings, Archer has been tagged for six runs over 5.1 IP against Cotuit and YD.
