On Aug. 13, the Wareham Gatemen defeated the Chatham Anglers to claim their eighth title in Cape League history. Their series clinching win was grueling and spanned two days, but in the end, the Gatemen were champions.
Here is a look back at the title win from last week as told by the photos. All photos were taken by the official Gatemen team photographer, Caroline O'Connor.
Derek West, the right hander out of the University of Pittsburgh, got the start for the Gatemen in Game 2. West gave up one run in the first, but pitched four scoreless innings after.
Oliver Dunn (50) fields a routine grounder in the second inning to record the putout. Dunn fielded all five of his chances cleanly in this game.
Dunn comes around to score on a two-run RBI single by Austin Shenton in the third giving Wareham a 2-1 lead.
Catcher Gian Martellini blocks a ball in the dirt to keep a runner at third base and Wareham ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the third.
In the same half inning, Isaac Collins robs a would-be homer off the bat of Tristin English. The play for Collins would end up #1 on SportsCenter a few days later. At this moment, it kept Wareham up 2-1 and he is shown being mobbed by his teammates for his efforts.
With Wareham now ahead 3-1, Drew Millas rips a double in the sixth inning, one of his three hits in this game. Millas would come around to score when Lael Lockhart Jr. singled two batters later. The Gatemen took a 4-1 lead entering the bottom of the sixth.
Before the bottom of the sixth occurred, the game was stopped and suspended due to the fog. As seen here, the fog made it almost impossible to see.
Prior to official suspension of play, a half-hour delay occurred. To pass the time, members of the Chatham Anglers played hacky sack.
The next day, play resumed in the bottom of the sixth with Wareham leading 4-1. Zach Hart took the mound for Wareham relieving West. Hart allowed one run to score in the inning, but left runners stranded on second and third.
The Gatemen would add a run in the top of the seventh to make it 5-2, but Colin Simpson (10) would hit a solo homer in the bottom half for Chatham. The Wareham lead was cut to 5-3. This score would remain until the ninth.
With the bases loaded in the ninth, Drew Millas singled to score two runs making it 7-3 Wareham. Then, Gian Martellini doubled to bring in Austin Shenton (left) and Millas (right). Wareham was up 9-3 and they were all smiles at this point.
Following his strike out of Spencer Torkleson to clinch the championship, Zach Hart begins the celebration for Wareham. Here, he is hugging his catcher, Martellini, as their teammates run out to join them.
The Gatemen celebrate their Cape Cod Baseball League Championship after receiving their official league champion hats and t-shirts. With the win, Wareham won all six of their playoff games and left no doubt as to who the best team in the CCBL was in 2018.
