Game 1 Recap: Defensive miscues and stellar pitching led to a 3-1 victory over the Brewster Whitecaps

WAREHAM-Bryce Elder got off to a hot start throwing a perfect game until the 4th inning. Elder’s control was on point with 4 strikeouts in 3 innings.

The California Berkeley connection proved pivotal as Darren Baker sent home Berkeley teammate Sam Wezniak on an RBI triple in the bottom of the third on a weird bounce to left field that completely fooled Noah Dickerson to give the Gatemen an early 1-0 lead.

“I have experience playing with a wooden bat as a temporary player for Brewster last summer and I honestly prefer using a wooden bat more” Baker said. “I got going in the NCAA Regional and after a few days of rest I feel really good”

The 3rd inning proved to be a turning point for the Gatemen as Cam Tringali saw his great start to the game fade away as Mike Antico sent home Darren Baker on an RBI double. Tringali struggled with his control in the 3rd walking 2 batters.

Damon Dues got Brewster’s first hit of the game off a single in the 4th and immediately after that it only got worse for Elder as Tyler Gentry hit an RBI double making it a 2-1 game. The 4th inning was a tricky one for the Gatemen as Chad Stevens made a costly error allowing a runners on the corners with 2 outs, but Elder was able to escape unscathed.

Elder’s night was over after 4 innings of work and although he wasn’t able to receive the win, he showed signs of being a valuable piece for the Gatemen rotation this season. Eric Torres took over in the 5th inning for the Gatemen.

Brewster followed suit changing pitchers for the 5th inning with Daniel Harper taking the mound. Similar to the first Gatemen run, center fielder Brennan Reback misread a ball hit by Kameron Guangorena advancing him to third base and sending Rudick home extending Wareham’s lead to 3-1.

Torres was solid in his Gatemen debut and after 2 innings of scoreless action Garrett Irvin took over for the 7th inning and showcased some nasty off-speed pitches striking out two batters. That was it for Torres as Tanner Bibee came in for the 8th inning.

Jimmy Ramsey relieved Daniel Harper in the 8th inning. There were scattered showers throughout the entire game, but it really came down hard in the 8th.

Tanner Bibee closed out the game in the 9th inning earning a save and due to his 2 scoreless innings of work Eric Torres was awarded the win. The loss went to Cam Tringali who allowed 2 runs in 4 innings of work.

“We can really pitch and that was immediately noticeable from just my short time being here” Baker said. “We are very well coached; Jerry does a great job preparing us and the results showed tonight.”
