New month, new opponent as Wareham travels to Bourne to play the Braves

WAREHAM- The Wareham Gatemen play West Division foe Bourne Braves for first time of the season tonight in Bourne at 6:00 p.m.

The Gatemen have been on a tear the past week in the CCBL winning 4 out of their last 5 games. Most recently last night, the Gatemen defeated the Cotuit Kettleers 1-0. Wareham has established an identity on winning with offense but last night that narrative was turned on its head.

Ian Bedell (Missouri) and Trent Palmer (Jacksonville) delivered masterful pitching performances. Bedell pitched 5 innings not allowing a run on 1 hit. Palmer pitched 4 innings of scoreless baseball only allowing 2 hits.

Benjamin Sems (Kansas) came through for the Gatemen giving them their only run on a sac-fly. It was an uncharacteristic night for the Gatemen offense who leads in most CCBL offensive categories. Jacob Teter (Florida Southern) and Sems are even ranked in the top 5 for best batting average on the Cape.

Bourne has been predicated on its pitching all season. The Braves have the second best ERA in the CCBL (2.95) and have allowed the least amount of runs on the Cape (37). The downfall for Bourne has been the offensive struggles. The Braves have the 3rdlowest batting average in the CCBL (.219) and this has showed in their most recent results.

Bourne is currently on a 3 game losing streak dropping 4 out of its last 5 games. Bourne has not given up more than 5 runs in any of those games so the run support has been an issue. The Braves were defeated last night by the Hyannis Harbor Hawks (3-11-1) 4-2.

Pitching was not an issue for Bourne as Ryan Cusick (Wake Forest) pitched 6 innings allowing 3 runs on 5 hits. The Braves out hit the Harbor Hawks 8-6 and all of Bourne’s runs came off a Henry Davis (Louisville) 2-run home run.

On the mound tonight for Wareham is JP Gates (Miami). In 3 innings Gates has allowed no runs on 3 hits. Gates is making his first start of this season so it will be interesting to see what he does in a full outing.
