WAREHAM- The Gatemen finally got an off day for the first time since June 25thand now return to action tonight at 6:45 against the Orleans Firebirds
The Wareham Gatemen are coming off a strange performance. The 7-5 victory over the Bourne Braves is rather deceiving when you break it down by the numbers. The Wareham offense put up all 7 runs in the first 2 innings.
After 2 innings of success, Wareham struggled to string together much offense failing to add another run of insurance. 5 Gatemen players had multi-hit games but the problem for the Gatemen over the last couple of games has been stranding men on base.
The Gatemen have stranded 15 runners on base over the past 3 games. The talent is there to turn things around. Wareham still has the best team batting average in the CCBL (.278) and lead the league in hits (169).
The Orleans Firebirds are in the thick of a very intense division race in the East Division. The Firebirds have lost 2 straight games in a row and have fallen to 3rdplace in the East Division with a record of (11-6-2).
If Orleans was in the West Division the Firebirds would have a 3 point lead which is a testament to how strong the East division is. Orleans is coming of an 8-7 July 4thdefeat against the East Division leaders Chatham Anglers.
It was a crazy game to say the least. Chatham came into the game with a plan of using 2 pitchers only and if forced to using a position player. Cole Ayers (Kentucky) went 5 innings only allowing 1 run on 4 hits. Luke Bartnicki (Georgia Tech) came into the game looking to close the game out but couldn’t finish it in the 9thallowing 4 runs.
Jorge Arenas (Stetson) a position player faced the tough test of trying to close the game out. Arenas closed out the game and earned a save in a game he probably thought he wouldn’t be pitching in.
Orleans will be motivated after not being able to complete the big comeback. On the mound for the Firebirds is Owen Sharts (Nevada). Sharts has been sensational for Orleans this season posting a .84 ERA with a. 1-0 record. In 10.2 innings of work Sharts has only allowed 1 run.
Wareham has its own great pitcher on the mound tonight in Ian Bedell (Missouri). Bedell is (1-0) on the season and a perfect 0.00 ERA in 14.2 innings of work striking out 13 batters.
