Gatemen stay hot defeating the Brewster White Caps on the road

Wareham came out swinging in the first inning. Braiden Ward (Washington) was hit by the pitcher and Darren Baker (Cal Berkeley) got on with a walk. Ward stole 2nd base and Baker advanced to 2ndon a double steal. From there Jacob Teter (Florida Sothern) and Adrian Del Castillo (Miami) took matters in to their own hands both sending home runs on sacrifice groundouts.

Matthew Mikulski (Fordham) continued to struggle in the 2ndinning. Matthew Rudick (San Diego State) was hit by a pitch and Ward laid down a perfect base down the first base line. Mikulski attempted to throw Ward out at first but threw it away allowing Rudick to score making the score 3-0.

Teter got his 2ndRBI of the night on an single in the 2ndinning improving to 6-16 with runners and scoring position and 2 outs on the year. Marcos Castanon (UC Santa Barbara) got the White Caps on the board in the 2ndinning with an RBI single making the score 4-1.

“ I just did the same thing I have been doing all week but this time hit the ball where the fielders weren’t so that was a lot of fun” Teter said “Brewster kind of sparked our offense in the first 2 innings making defensive mistakes and from there we took over.”

Coy Cobb (Texas) worked himself into a jam in the 2ndinning with runners on 2ndand 3rd. Cobb escaped striking out Brett Auerbach (Alabama) for his 3rdstrikeout of the game. It was a tough inning for Cobb allowing the 7,8, and 9 hitters to get on base.

Tyler Gentry (Alabama) hit an RBI triple in the triple in the 3rdinning to end Cobb’s night and made the score 4-2. Cobb’s final line was 2.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO. Trey Dillard (Missouri) took over in relief duties. Dillard was an escape artist for the Gatemen.

Jesse Franklin (Michigan) hit a single and Castanon got on with a walk. A wild pitch advanced both runners and Justin Vought had a chance to do damage with no outs in the 4thinning. Dillard struck out 3 batters in a row to remarkably end the inning.

In the 5thinning it was a similar story as Gentry and Mason Dodd (Belmont Abbey) hit back-to-back doubles cutting the deficit to 4-3. A walk and wild pick-off attempt put runners on 1stand 2nd  but Dillard once again escaped.

3 straight hits added some insurance for the Gatemen in the 7thinning. Baker and teter hit singles, and Del Castillo perfectly placed a double down the third base line sending home a run making it 5-3.

Matt McLain (UCLA) hit an RBI single making the score 6-3. Benjamin Sems (Kansas) scored Wareham’s 3rdrun of the inning sending home a run on a sacrifice fly. Rudick made it 8-3 on an RBI single.

Tanner Bibee (Cal State Fullerton) came into the game in the 8thinning. Bibee was dominant on the mound finishing with a line of 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 2 SO. Dillard was awarded the win for his relief efforts and Mikulski earned the loss for an uncharacteristic performance.

Several recently named CCBL West Division All-Stars had great nights. Baker was 2-4, Teter was 2-5 with 2 RBI, McLain was 2-3 with 1 RBI, and Del Castillo was 1-4 with 2 RBI.

“It’s incredible to be named All-Star and it’s a huge honor. This is probably one of my biggest accomplishments” Teter said “Every Gatemen player that was named to the team deserved it we are glad to represent the West Division.”

The Gatemen improved to 17-12-1 on the season retaining 1st place in the West Division. The White Caps still remain in 4th place in the East Division with a 13-4-1 record. Brewster hits the road to play Chatham tonight at 7:00 p.m. The Gatemen have an off-day today and are back in action Tuesday July 16thin Falmouth against the Commodores at 6:00 p.m.
